What is gum disease?
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a degenerative condition that affects the gums and soft tissues of your mouth. Gum disease can have a serious impact on the overall health of your smile. If left untreated, it can cause pain, tooth loss, and even bone loss. Signs and symptoms of gum disease include:
- Bleeding gums
- Swollen or tender gums
- A receding gumline
- Loose teeth
- A recurring lump or pimple on your gums
- Increased tooth pain and tooth sensitivity
To combat gum disease and protect the health of your entire smile, we provide excellent periodontal treatment in Marietta, Georgia.
How is gum disease treated?
The goal of periodontal treatment is to remove all infected gum tissues, prevent the infection from spreading, and reduce pain and discomfort. The two main types of treatment we offer are scaling and root planing. Scaling and root planing are deep cleaning methods designed to remove all infected tissue from above and below the gumline and to smooth the rough areas on your teeth where bacteria can get trapped. If your case is serious enough, periodontal surgery may be suggested. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of gum disease, please call and schedule an appointment with our caring dentist, Dr. James M. Kinney.
